The Whitman-Hanson Regional High School wrestling team is flying to Orlando, Florida, today to compete for the first time in in the KSA Orlando Tournament.
“It will be great to wrestle some teams from out of state,” said coach Kevin Broderick. “Different areas use different moves and different techniques, so it will be fun to see what they do and see if they do the same things that we do.
“Some areas of the country, wrestling is a little more elite, so it will be interesting to see, if we run up against some of those teams, how it goes.”
It is the first time the boys in the Panthers wrestling program will be traveling to Orlando for the tournament. The Whitman-Hanson boys basketball team had competed in the KSA basketball tournament for several years. The team members raise the money to pay for the trip during the Christmas school vacation.
“It’s certainly something we’ve never done before,” said Broderick. “I want us to get some good wrestling experience and have a good time.”
After flying to Florida today, the Whitman-Hanson wrestlers will be on the mat on Monday with the competition lasting until Wednesday.
Though the tournament is the main priority, Broderick said the team will have some time to enjoy what Orlando has to offer.
Despite the vacation-type feel the trip brings, the team knows there is work to be done once the tournament starts.
“There’s definitely a vacation aspect,” said senior captain Garrett McSweeney. “But I think there’s that goal in mind that we still have to go down there and give it our hardest at the tournament.”
While the trip will only last for a few days, Broderick said he hopes the team can take what they learn from it and pack it in their suitcases for when they return to the mat in Massachusetts.
“Any kind of new experiences and things we can see on the mat, hopefully we can take some of that home with us,” Broderick said.-

Whitman-Hanson Improves to 4-1 on the Young Season
Saturday, December 20th, 2014
After defeating Duxbury on Wednesday night, the Panthers won 3 out of 4 meets today in Marshfield. Also in Marshfield to compete were Chelmsford, Stoughton, Weymouth, and Toll Gate, Rhode Island. W-H did not start out on the right foot early as they dropped the first of its four meets on the day to powerhouse Chelmsford 60-22. The scrappy Panthers pounced back though taking the next three from Weymouth 60-18, Marshfield 63-12 and Toll Gate, RI 53-14. Next up for Whitman-Hanson wrestling is a new adventure as the team heads south to Florida with Coach Broderick to compete in the KSA Classic & Holiday Duals Wrestling Tournament at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. Participating teams come nationwide from Alaska to Florida and from Massachusetts to California, providing a true national competition format that brings together teams who would otherwise never meet on the mat. It has taken much planning and Coach Broderick hopes to make it an annual tradition of competition.

ADVICE TO WRESTLERS IN THE OFF-SEASON FROM FORMER WH COACH/MASSACHUSETTS WRESTLING HALL OF FAME COACH BOB GAY
- Lift on a regular schedule because stronger wrestlers defeat weaker wrestlers.
- Improve your skills by wrestling in the off-season at clubs, camps, and tournaments.
- Stay in shape by running because quicker wrestlers defeat slower wrestlers.
- Finally and most importantly, be good and decent human beings - avoid alcohol, drugs, tobacco, etc. because good will triumph over evil!
Student safety advisory from MIAA
Wednesday, March 5th, 2014
On Wednesday, March 5, 2014 the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association released the following statement:
In an effort to ensure the safety of our students, we wanted to pass along some critical information regarding a person trying to contact local athletes on Facebook. The person goes by "Manny Whelan" on Facebook, and he is offering local student-athletes money to "compete" in an "underground wrestling club" that is held in local hotels. It has come to our attention that this person has been contacting local male student-athletes for at least two years. This may not be exclusive to wrestling, so please inform ALL of your coaches, parents, and students.
If you have any information regarding this, please contact your local resource officer. If one is not available, contact the Massachusetts Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force at 978-451-3550.
