This past Sunday we worked on reviewing and learning wrestling from the neutral or standing position. With youtube.com there are tons of examples of what we covered this past week. Cary Kolat is the Associate Head Wrestling Coach at UNC and he has his own website www.kolat.com. There are some free videos there, but it's mostly a membership site. There are however quite a few of his videos for free on you tube. Here are a few videos that match up to what we did this past Sunday. This coming week we will work on top and bottom wrestling, drilling, technique, conditioning and new moves.

Another good practice and we had three new sign ups so that's great. We went over a lot of things today in regards to top and bottom wrestling and will be building on that with each practice. Here are a few more videos where you can review some of the things we covered today. Parents, if you could please make sure your kids watch them as we think it's a great reinforcer and can help pull it together when they are practicing at home. We have had some communication with the area youth programs and the schedule for some scrimmages and tournaments starting in January should be finalized soon. We don't need to focus on that right now, we'll just work on preparing although we may get in scrimmage with another town before then.

Good practice this morning and the kids are progressing well. We did some reviewing of moves, lots of drilling, and also introduced takedown defense that included the whizzer and front head locks to turn your defense into offense. Please be sure to review the videos below with your children. Monday 12/17 is our last clinic before the school vacation and then we will switch to the Tuesday/Thursday evening time slots. There will be a more formal scrimmage and tournament schedule coming soon, but I do have early indication that Sunday, January 20th there will be a tournament in Hanover and the following Sunday, January 27th in Duxbury. These are about as local as you can get and the competition is usually pretty good so we plan on attending.

Good practice last night and if you noticed the pace of the practice has picked up. This is due to the shorter practice time of 1.5 hours and the fact that we are one week away from our first scrimmage at Pembroke on 1/10. I’ll confirm the start time but it’s usually been like 5-5:30 pm. I had a chance to talk to some of the parents prior to practice in regards to the scheduling, but wanted to revisit it here. Whitman-Hanson is a supporter of what is known as the South Coast Youth Wrestling league started by Pembroke about five years ago. This was started as a way for youth programs on the south shore to compete against each other and minimize the travel and long weekend tournament days. Although some of these weeknight scrimmages can run about 3 hours, it’s still better than an 8 hour tournament on a Sunday where your son or daughter still only wrestle 3-4 matches anyways. You’ll hear of other towns going to tournaments somewhere around the state every Sunday and that’s fine for them. We don’t see the need where you can get some experience locally and not give up all your Sundays. I know my kids compete in other sports and I think it’s important to have balance between kid’s activities and family time. As you see on the website schedule, we do plan on attending a couple of local Sunday tournaments as well as the sectional tournament where your son or daughter can qualify for the state tournament. The way I want to handle the commitment piece is that I’m going to assume you can make the matches and have you communicate to us via e mail only when you can’t with the schedule already known, I ask that you start to look at it and let me know of conflicts. The hosting towns of these scrimmages need to know in advance what we plan to bring for numbers and if we tell them 20 and only 10 show up we look bad and it hurts the league. If the league dissolves it’s back to carting our kids around to all day weekend tournaments so let’s do our part as I know you will.

I have a few reminders for this week and additional information for the upcoming Hanover tournament.
·Practice tonight Tuesday 1/8 at the high school from 6:00-7:30 pm
·Scrimmage at Pembroke High School on Thursday 1/10. Please arrive at 5:45 pm. There will be no practice at W-H that night if you’re not going to the scrimmage. Please let me know via e mail by tonight if you’re not planning on attending.
·Important info on Hanover 1/20 Tournament. Please Click Here to view the flyer and the follow the instructions to register online in advance. This tournament is online registration only and limited to the first 300 Wrestlers. This is different than some other tournaments where you register on the morning of the tourney. This won’t be an option so I need you as parents to register them on line as soon as possible so not to be left out. The cost is $10.00 per wrestler. I’m hoping with the online registration that we get wrestling earlier that day. On the registration, it will ask you about his skill level.1-2 years should put novice, 2-3 intermediate (based on comfort level) and anyone beyond 3 years should put experienced. Check in with any of the coaches if you have questions on this.

First of all let us say that we are proud of the team and the way they wrestled at last Thursday’s scrimmage. I was especially proud of the wrestlers who competed for the first time. I know It can seem a little intimidating, but now you know what to expect and my experience has shown me that we improve with each one. These scrimmages also let us know as coaches where we need to focus our attention and how to structure our practices to meet these needs. This week we will have our normal practices on Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in preparation for the Hanover tournament on Sunday 1/20. I have seen acknowledgments for some wrestlers that have registered for the tournament. Just a reminder it’s an on line only registration that closes on 1/17/13 at 6:00 p.m. or until they reach the max of 300 wrestlers. I think it will fill up so please register if you plan on attending. See one of us during practice Tuesday or email us if you have any questions or concerns on whether your child should wrestle on Sunday.

Great job yesterday at the tournament! We had several place winners and several wrestlers who got their first tournament win. We would like for all wrestlers to wear their new red shirts to practice tomorrow night as we would like to take a team photo for the website. We will hand out shirts and bags for wrestlers that weren’t able to compete in the tournament. For wrestlers that received a medal or trophy yesterday, please bring them with you to practice for a picture also. I will be typing up a little paragraph on the tournament for the website in the coming week. Hanover did a good job yesterday of running that tournament and so for parents that were new to that scenario, now you have seen the controlled chaos of a wrestling tournament! We had some new wrestlers that might have been a little overwhelmed at some of what was going on, but they did well and the experience will help them going forward. This week we have practice Tuesday at 6:00 pm and then a scrimmage in Scituate on Thursday (start time TBD). We also have another tournament on Sunday 1/27 in Duxbury. This tournament isn’t a pre registered one so you will have to show up the day of and register. This one is larger and may run longer than the 2:00 p.m. finish time yesterday in Hanover. We have lots to work on in practice so we will see you all there Tuesday.

Scituate is all set to host at Scituate High School gym on Thursday 1/24. Braintree & W-H can show up anytime betwen 5:45-6:00, the earlier the better. This will only be for the 5th-8th graders. Let's have a good showing with numbers on Thursday and we'll see you tonight at practice.

Just wanted to pass along a couple of photos. One is of the team and the second one is of the wrestlers who recently placed at the Hanover Tournament. My camera isn't the greatest so if anyone snapped one that came out better, let me know and send it to me. If anyone takes pictures during our competitions that you think may be good for the website you can send them to me.
In the tourney photo left to right is Alex O'Roak - 2nd place, Logan Desmond - 3rd place, Sean Wright - 3rd place, Chris Kenney - 4th place, Aaron Brown - 1st place, Josh Baker - 3rd place and Josh Brown - 4th place

Good job last night in Scituate. As with most wrestling events we saw some good things and some not so good things. That's why we have coaches and practices so we can improve each week and I think we are. Could you please let me know if your son or daughter is not coming to the Duxbury tournament on Sunday. There should be some good competition there, but I understand it's a long day and may be a lot for first year wrestlers. Everybody should be fine, but email me if your unsure. We do have a scrimmage in Pembroke next Thursday also.
Monday, January 28th, 2013
Great job yesterday in Duxbury! Congrats to our place winners and for all those who participated and competed. We have been going that tournament for a few years now and I must say that this year had the toughest competition by far. The tournament was not without its issues though and I’d like to see them improve a few things before next year to make it run smoother. This week we are in Pembroke on Thursday for a scrimmage with three other teams. We only have a couple of these SCWL scrimmages left so this is the best opportunity for your wrestler to gain experience without going to a large tournament.
Here is some important information on the upcoming sectional tournament for Sunday 2/3/13 in Hanover. This tournament is for experienced wrestlers! There is no matching up based experience or skill level. There are two divisions based on birth date. Novice division is born between September 1, 2000 and August 31, 2002. Everybody else falls into MIDDLE SCHOOL DIVISION: Born between September 1, 1997 and August 31, 2000 and must be in the 8th grade or lower. An example could be; If your 6th grader weighs 85 pounds and has been wrestling two years, he could be wrestling an 8th grader that weighs 85 pounds and has been wrestling for eight years. Your weight is your weight based on your birth date above. Top five place winners qualify to go on and wrestle in the state tournament. We have only a handful of kids that are ready for this tournament, but we will coach any kids who want to compete. There is a cutoff date and registration that must be done on line only by noon on February 1st. The cost is $35.00 -$40.00 per wrestler. Below is the link with additional information that lists the weigh in locations that occur the day before the tournament. Please let me know if your child is going to compete and be sure to register him or her before the deadline. E-mail or see me on Tuesday with any questions. Your kids are doing great in what I and many consider one of the toughest sports out there! See you Tuesday.

Last night’s practice went well. We still have a few weeks to work on our wrestling. On Thursday we will be at Pembroke High School again at 5:45 pm.
It is a normal scrimmage with wrestlers bracketed up according to weight, skill level and grade. Sunday is the sectional tournament at Hanover High School. So
far we have Sean, Tim, Aaron, Alex, Josh and Joel who want to wrestle. These guys know that they have to sign up online and they also know what weight class they want to wrestle in. The cost will be $25.00 because we (Whitman-Hanson Youth Wrestling) are members of the MYWA (ENTRY ID: 2542223). We have until Friday to register and we will need to weigh in either Friday or Saturday morning (times TBA).
Remember: "A couple of sets of push ups, sit-ups, squats and pull-ups every other day goes along way to helping young athletes continue to thrive..."

I just wanted to say how proud we are of the wrestlers that attended Sectionals this past Sunday. This tournament featured some very tough competition including many club programs. Last year we had two wrestlers attend sectionals and this year we had six, so that is great progress for the program. The point of attending these types of tournaments is not glory for the program, but rather a chance for the wrestlers to gauge their progress and compete at one of the higher levels at youth wrestling. Regardless of whether you won or lost yesterday, you now know what it will take to be successful in this sport. I wanted to say thank you to Brian Conrad of CBC Wrestling in Raynham for having our sectional participants over for a special practice last week. We have our regular practice Tuesday this week and a scrimmage in Pembroke on Thursday. I’m going to take the Big East tournament off the competition schedule based on what I think would be best for our wrestlers. Most of us would benefit from some hard practices and scrimmages to prepare for the season end Pembroke tournament on 2/19/13. Again, congratulations to sectional participants Aaron Brown, Alex O’Roak, Josh Baker, Dylan Burgio, Tim Cronin and Sean Wright. Sean and Tim have both qualified for the state tournament by placing 4th and 5th in their weight category. See you at practice tomorrow.

Important location change for tonight. Still in Pembroke, but not at the high school. We will be right across the street!
The Pembroke coaches found out last night that we can not use the high school gymnasium. They have secured the Hobomock Gym which is where they practice. It’s about half the size and has no bleachers. They will set up tables and chairs around the mats. They will have concessions. It will be a little tight but they think it is worth giving it a shot. I just wanted everybody to know.
The Hobomock School is right across the street from the High School. Drive down learning lane and it’s on your right. Parking is on the right before the school and in back. Please use the side entrance near the parking.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I hope all is getting better for each of you as I know parts of Hanson remain without power. Whitman-Hanson has cancelled school for tomorrow so we won't have access to the school for practice. See you all on Thursday. This will be our last practice and we will stop wrestling a little bit early to play some games and have some pizza. Our last competition for the year will be at the Pembroke tournament on Tuesday 2/19.

First off I want to say congratulations to our three wrestlers who competed in the state tournament yesterday.Tim Cronin, Sean Wright and Aaron Brown all wrestled hard and with a lot of heart! This was a tough double elimination tournament and each of the guys lost a match to a wrestler that went on to place in the top 3 in the state, so way to battle. Aaron also had to qualify the day before in a win it all or go home Big East tournament and he did just that, so congrats to him on being the Big East Champ as well. In what I’ll say was our best match of the day, Aaron avenged a sectional 1-0 loss from the week before by pinning the
kid at States! Aaron and Tim are part of a group of 8th graders that have been with the program for years and we couldn’t be successful without any of them. We want to thank all of our 8th graders and wish them success in high school in whatever they choose to do. Thanks to Doug Brown for helping me with the coaching duties this weekend so Coach Baker could watch his high school senior daughters compete in the state tournament in track. Congrats to Rachel and Abbey Baker on their great season and good luck at the upcoming all states in track. Congratulations to the high school team that is sending three wrestlers to the state tournament. Good luck to Brody DeMinico, Greg McGrath and Zach Perkins. Those three names are familiar in that they all got their start in the W-H youth program! We still have one last hurrah as a wrestling team and that’s the Pembroke tournament this coming Thursday, so let’s have some fun with it! Let me know if you don’t plan on attending.

I just wanted to make everyone aware that tomorrow’s year end tournament in Pembroke is a little bit different than the scrimmages for just the 6th - 8th graders.
6th - 8th graders are going to wrestle based just on weight and not experience. This is how most tourneys are run and is different from our scrimmages where we group them on weight and experience. Let me know if that changes anyone’s mind on attending. Honestly it's how it should be for a year end tournament and it will be mostly kids we have seen throughout our scrimmages and tournaments this season. 1st - 4th graders will still be matched up based on weight and experience level. Times are below and you pay when you register that day.
