Dave Armstrong, '91 announced as new head wrestling coach
August 21, 2023
Whitman Hanson Regional High School announced today the hiring of Dave Armstrong as its new varsity wrestling coach. Coach Armstrong is a 1991 Whitman-Hanson graduate where he captained the wrestling team his senior year. Upon graduation, he volunteered as an assistant coach with the Panthers before joining the Navy as a medic. In 1995 he rejoined his former head coach, Bob Gay, as an assistant which began a 10 year stint. In 2001, Coach Armstrong was named the MIAA Assistant Coach of the Year. Following his time coaching at Whitman-Hanson, he also coached at Sandwich High School. He has coached 5 MIAA State Champions, 15 MIAA Sectional Champions and 4 wrestlers who hit the 100+ win mark. "Whitman-Hanson wrestling has a rich tradition and to bring back someone who has been an integral part of that success means a lot to our school," Whitman-Hanson Athletic Director Bob Rodgers said. "Many alumni reached out to me in support of Coach Armstrong prior to the interviews and he lived up to every word during the interview. We couldn't be more excited to have him on board." Coach Armstrong replaces Gary Rabinovitz who stepped down at the beginning of the summer due to work commitments. Coach Rabinovitz led the Panthers for the past 7 years compiling a record of 61-79-3 and this past year finished with an impressive 12-6-3 record. The team also took third at the Weymouth Tournament, Team Runner-up at the Sandwich Tournament and second at the Bob Gay Invitational. The team had 19 Individual Tournament Champions and three D2 Sectional Champions - Charlie Lussier, Austin Gamber, Cooper Lussier. Sophomore Charlie Lussier won the D2 State Championship. |
ADVICE TO WRESTLERS IN THE OFF-SEASON...
1. Lift on a regular schedule because stronger wrestlers defeat weaker wrestlers.
2. Improve your skills by wrestling in the off-season at clubs, camps, and tournaments. 3. Stay in shape by running because quicker wrestlers defeat slower wrestlers. 4. Finally and most importantly, be good and decent human beings - avoid alcohol, drugs, tobacco, etc. because good will triumph over evil!
