Gary Rabinovitz resigns as head coach
Saturday, June 17, 2023
We are disappointed to announce that our wrestling coach Gary Rabinovitz has resigned after a 7 year run as our head coach and a literal lifetime with our school. “It is with a heavy heart I share my letter of resignation,” Coach Rabinovitz wrote to his players and parents. He explained that his full time job has gotten increasingly difficult and he can no longer balance the two responsibilities. He leaves a strong program behind as Whitman Hanson is currently ranked 7th in the D2 pre season polls. The team is returning defending state champion Charlie Lussier as well as 3 sectional champions (Lussier, Austin Gamber and Cooper Lussier). The team was 23-13-3 under Coach Rabinovitz over the last two seasons. Coach Rabinovitz is a 1979 graduate of Whitman Hanson and was a member of the first ever Panther wrestling team. He came back to assist coach Bob Gay after graduating from Plymouth State and Army. Whitman Hanson will immediately post the job and hope to have a replacement named in the coming weeks. Interested candidates should email [email protected] . |

Honoring a legend: Whitman-Hanson names wrestling tournament after former coach and triple Hall of Famer Bob Gay
Friday, January 13, 2023
By AJ Traub Globe Correspondent
In 1979, Bob Gay answered the call for a wrestling coach at Whitman-Hanson, despite having never wrestled. Last weekend, the wrestling triple Hall of Famer (National, Massachusetts, Whitman-Hanson) attended a tournament bearing his own name.
Gary Rabinovitz, Whitman-Hanson’s current wrestling coach, talked with Bob Rodgers, the school’s athletic director, and came up with an idea to rename the Panther Invitational to the Bob Gay Invitational in honor of the man who compiled a 271-60-2 record with the program.
“It’s been coming up for a few years now, and I think the timing was perfect this time around,” said Rabinovitz, referring to Gay’s induction in October into the school’s Hall of Fame.
Rabinovitz surprised Gay at his induction ceremony, keeping him at the podium and announcing the name change.
“The lump in the throat, I was in tears,” Gay said. “I was very humbled that they considered doing that.”
Gay, 70, now coaching at Bristol-Plymouth, saw his Craftsmen finish in third place with 147.5 points, behind first-place Brockton (180.5 points) and runner-up Whitman-Hanson (165.5).
Bristol-Plymouth was led by junior Jacob Bettencourt, a finalist at 132 pounds. Every member of the team received Bob Gay Invitational apparel, courtesy of the man himself.
“All my 15 kids [on the roster], I bought a T-shirt for them,” he said. “I bought one for my wife, my daughter, my son-in-law, my granddaughter, one for me . . . The first time is special, you know.”
Brockton took three championships in their team victory: senior Bubba Winn at 120, classmate Mark Lattimore at 152, and junior Aman Khalil at 170.
“It was exciting for us, especially us older guys, because Bob has been such a great contributor to the sport,” said Brockton coach Deshawn Fentress. “To win it is something I’ll say is always near and dear to my heart.”
Whitman-Hanson crowned five champions, including three senior captains whose fathers wrestled for Gay: Maddox Colclough (285), son of Chris Colclough; Aidan Guiliani (145), son of Chris Guiliani; and Braden Kain (138), son of Shawn Kain.
Sophomores Christian Grimaldi (113) and Charlie Lussier (106) also won. Lussier earned three pins before a technical fall in the finals, improving his season record to 20-0 with 17 pins.
Rabinovitz joked at the Hall of Fame announcement that even though the tournament is named for Gay, he’d still beat his team.
“[Gay has] continued to grow as a coach, he really cares about his kids,” Rabinovitz said. “I think that’s really important, to really care about the kids you’re coaching.”
Added Fentress: “It’s wild to say I know somebody who has a tournament named after him. For me, I’m a fan of the sport, but I’m also a fan of legends like Bob.”

Bob Gay and Kevin Broderick inducted into Whitman-Hanson Athletics Hall of Fame
Congratulations to two members of our Whitman-Hanson Panther Wrestling family, Bob Gay and Kevin Broderick, who have been selected to be inducted into the Whitman-Hanson Athletics Hall of Fame on Sunday, October 9, 2022 at 5:00pm at the South Shore Country Club in Hingham, MA!!
Bob Gay: Bob began coaching Whitman-Hanson wrestling in 1985 and led the program until leaving Whitman-Hanson in July of 2001 to become the Principal at North Attleboro High School. In his very first year at W-H, he guided a young team to a league title and, only a few years later, in 1988 he led the Panthers to the South Sectional Championship. The mid-1990’s saw W-H as one of the top teams in Massachusetts, setting a state record of 53 consecutive dual meet wins over three seasons. W-H won South Sectional Championships in 1994 and 1995 as Bob was selected as Coach of the Year. He was also the Div. 2 Boston Globe Coach of the Year in 1994. On 7/1/95, Bob became the Principal at Whitman-Hanson. In January of 1997, he recorded his 200th win at Wayland High School. In his 16 years as the W-H varsity coach, his teams’ record was 271-60-2. Bob’s teams won nine league championships and three sectional championships. He has coached nine individual state champions and more than 30 sectional champions. Bob now coaches at Bristol-Plymouth where he recorded his 400th dual meet win on 1/15/22.
Bob gives much credit to the outstanding coaches he has worked with: Paul Holmes, Gary Rabinovitz, Kevin Broderick, Dale Smith, Dave Armstrong and Nick Flynn. He is especially proud of the hundreds of wrestlers he has coached over the years for their dedication, hard work, competitive enthusiasm and good sportsmanship. Finally, and most importantly, he thanks his best friend, soul mate, and wife Linda for 45+ years of her support. Bob also thanks his wonderful children, Kristin and Kevin, for their understanding as to why Dad was seldom home in the winter months from 1979-2001.
Bob gives much credit to the outstanding coaches he has worked with: Paul Holmes, Gary Rabinovitz, Kevin Broderick, Dale Smith, Dave Armstrong and Nick Flynn. Kevin Broderick: Kevin is a 1988 graduate of Whitman-Hanson where he was a standout football player and wrestler. He was a two-time sectional champion in wrestling (1987 and 1988) and was a state champion in 1988. He was the MVP of the 1988 sectional championship wrestling team. In football, he was the team MVP on the Super Bowl runner-up team in 1987 and won the Golden Helmet Award that season. Kevin was a Boston Globe All-Scholastic in wrestling (1988) and also earned Patriot Ledger and Brockton Enterprise All-Scholastic awards in wrestling (1987 and 1988) and football (1988). After graduating from Whitman-Hanson, he went on to play football at Holy Cross where he tore his ACL at the end of the season. He transferred to Stonehill where, three years and three surgeries later, he returned to football earning an All Conference honorable mention in 1992 and ECFC All Conference honors in 1993. Kevin defined what it meant to be a student-athlete in both high school and college—he graduated Suma Cum Laude while being named to the GTE COSIDA Academic All-American Team. He went on to medical school and now works as an urgent care doctor at Compass Medical in East Bridgewater. Kevin returned to high school wrestling as a coach with both Scituate and Whitman-Hanson before stepping down after the birth of his daughter, Hailey. Kevin and his wife Tracy reside in Hanson.
