BY NATE ROLLINS, EXPRESS SPORTS CORRESPONDENT
Freshmen twins Charlie and Cooper Lussier have advanced to All-States for wrestling.
The Lussier twins are moving on — to All-States, that is.
Charlie (106 pounds) and Cooper (152) placed fifth and fourth, respectively, in their weight class to keep their tournament runs alive.
“The Lussier boys never cease to amaze me as I often overlook the fact that they are still just freshmen,” said W-H head coach Gary Rabinovitz.
Charlie went 4-2 on the weekend with three pins, while Cooper went 3-2 and also racked up three pins of his own. Their combined record on the season is 66-8.
The All-State Tournament will take place this Friday and Saturday at Game On Fitchburg. W-H has never had an All-State champion.
“Both Charlie and Cooper will continue to work harder this week than they did last week to prepare for the All-State Tournament, you can be sure of that,” Rabinovitz said.

8 wrestlers heading to States
Thursday, February 17, 2022
BY NATE ROLLINS, EXPRESS SPORTS CORRESPONDENT
It’s been 20 years since Ben Dineen captured the state title at 171 pounds.
He’s the last Whitman-Hanson Regional High wrestler to be named a state champion.
This year, the Panthers will have plenty of chances to snap that drought.
That’s because they’re sending eight wrestlers to compete in the Division 2 state tournament, which will take place this Friday and Saturday at Game On in Fitchburg. They’ll also bring two alternates.
“I am beyond ecstatic to be bringing eight wrestlers to the 2022 D2 state wrestling championships,” said W-H head coach Gary Rabinovitz.
Those eight are: freshman Charlie Lussier (106 pounds), sophomore Austin Gamber (126), junior Aidan Guiliani (132), junior Braden Kain (138), senior captain Pat Collett (145), freshman Cooper Lussier (152), senior captain Rocco Ruffini (220) and junior Maddox Colclough (285). Freshman Christian Grimaldi and junior Rocco Hanaphy (160) will serve as alternates.
Pay attention to both Charlie Lussier and Guiliani. After going a perfect 29-0 during the regular season, Charlie Lussier will look to rebound from his first loss of the winter, which he suffered at last weekend’s South Sectionals. Meanwhile at 132 pounds, Guiliani looks to keep it rolling after capturing first place at sectionals, the only Panther to hit the top of the podium on the day.

Lussier twins making major impact on mat for Whitman-Hanson
Friday, February 4, 2022
By Ethan McDowell Globe Correspondent
Twins Charlie and Cooper Lussier were not vocal leaders when they initially joined the wrestling room at Whitman-Hanson. But the example the two freshmen have set on the mat jumpstarted a run of success for the program that has not been seen in years.
The Panthers (9-6) picked up their first tournament win in 12 years at the 2022 Weymouth Tournament, with both Cooper and Charlie taking home individual titles at 152 and 106 pounds, respectively.
After an up and down Patriot League season, the Panthers faced Hingham on Thursday with a chance to capture a share of their first league title since the 2010-11 season. Whitman-Hanson fell short, but both twins continued their elite runs with first-period pins. Charlie is 26-0 and Cooper is 25-2.
“We have really good team chemistry,” Charlie Lussier said. “So we always want to see each other succeed. And the only way to do that is to push each other for the better of ourselves.”
The leadership of senior captains Pat Collett —who pushes Cooper at practice each day — and Rocco Ruffini has been critical for the Panthers and the development of the twins throughout the year.
Whitman-Hanson coach Gary Rabinovitz , at the helm since 2014, has been familiar with the Lusssier twins since they were competing in the local youth wrestling scene.
He knew their potential, and even attempted to get a waiver to have the duo on the mat as eighth graders.
“I knew they would make an impact pretty much immediately,” Rabinovitz said. “Did I know it would be [26-0 and 25-2] at this point? That’s probably a different story.”
The Lussiers are two of the nine freshmen on the W-H squad. They started wrestling in elementary school, so they were prepared for the jump to the varsity level.
“‘I’ve probably been wrestling a lot longer than a lot of these kids because I started when I was really little,” Cooper said. “They do have a lot more strength than me, but experience always beats strength.”
At the start of the season, the twins were on the shy side, according to Rabinovitz, collecting their victories and supporting the team quietly. But during a cheerful bus ride home following the championship run at Weymouth, Cooper asked Rabinovitz if he could address the team.
The freshman, who had just secured the 152-pound individual title, emphasized the importance of staying hungry for the rest of the season because the Patriot League gauntlet was on the horizon.
“A lot of people were just really happy we won but I wanted to make sure we kept winning after that,” Cooper said. “I didn’t want to be satisfied with just winning that one tournament.”
The Panthers have responded well to that message.
Rabinovitz wrestled (at 121 pounds) for the inaugural Whitman-Hanson varsity wrestling team in 1978. And he was a member of the coaching staff during the 1988-89 season. During his six years as a head coach, no wrestler has reached the New England Tournament level. He thinks that could change this year when the team takes the mat in the coming weeks.
Charlie Lussier said the Panthers are focused on a state championship run; he also recognizes he would not be in this position as a title contender if it weren’t for his brother.
“We wouldn’t be half as good if we didn’t have each other,” Charlie said.

Whitman-Hanson's Lussier twins make impressive burst onto varsity wrestling scene
Tuesday, February 1, 2022
Jason Snow, The Enterprise
Whitman-Hanson High wrestling coach Gary Rabinovitz didn't have to look too closely to spot potential the first time he saw Charlie and Cooper Lussier on a wrestling mat six years ago.
“Every year, I knew what we had coming and it was just a matter of waiting," Rabinovitz said. "They’re just nonstop wrestling. They love it. We really have a lot ahead of us.”
The Lussier twins have been well worth the wait. Combined, the two freshmen have a 49-2 record in their debut varsity campaigns, Charlie Lussier is 25-0 himself.
Their unassuming physiques (Charlie Lussier weighs in at 106 pounds, Cooper at 152) make their wrestling stardom all the more unbelievable at first glance. Then again, their matchups typically don't last longer than that.
“I like to be quick because a lot of these kids are older, so they’re stronger," Cooper Lussier said of his skillset. "We drill a lot in our basement, we drill being quick.”
“It’s just you versus someone else, it’s not up to anyone else. It’s about mental toughness,” Charlie Lussier said.
The freshman twins have led Whitman-Hanson to a 9-5 team record, a nice rebound from a shortened 6-7 season last year, one season after the Panthers finished 14-7 in 2019-20. Charlie Lussier refers to that type of collective success as 'always good, but kind of expected.'
“Between them, I think there’s going to be a lot of trips to the postseason and beyond. Not to put any pressure, but they put it on themselves," Rabinovitz said. "Whitman-Hanson is in the right direction right now and they’re a huge part of it.”
The two began wrestling in the second or third grade, with roots stemming from a gym named 'Champions Building Champions.' Rabinovitz describes wrestling to be a sport much more dependent on technique than overpowering strength, but he's excited for the Lussier twins to one day connect the two down the line.
“When they fill their bodies," Rabinovitz said, "people are going to be running from the two of them for a long time.”
Charlie and Cooper Lussier have combined for 34 pins on the season.
"There's only little things you can correct because they've been on the mats so much in their lives," Rabinovitz said of coaching them both. "There's a little different style from different coaches, so I'm (seeing) what I can add."
A team with increased numbers as seven other freshman showed interest this year, the Panthers are laying an impressive foundation to build on for years to come.
Senior Rocco Ruffini, senior Joe Boss, junior Aidan Guiliani, junior Rocco Hanaphy, junior Braden Kain, junior Maddox Colclough and senior captain Pat Collett join the Lussier's as those ready to win right now. Whitman-Hanson can clinch a share of the league title against Hingham next week.
"We have a great supporting cast for them to walk in and solidify," Rabinovitz said. "Put it all together and it's made a huge difference."

Wrestling Notebook: Bob Gay at 70: ‘I still love what I do’
By DANNY VENTURA | [email protected] | Boston Herald

Bob Gay figured his coaching career was over when he retired as wrestling coach and principal at Whitman-Hanson in 2001.
He returned home to North Attleboro in large part to be closer to his ailing dad. Gay then accepted a job as principal at North Attleboro and found various ways to remain involved in wrestling, whether it was as a fan, the Div. 2 state tournament director and a color commentator on North Attleboro Cable.
Gay went on to become the principal at Coyle-Cassidy in 2010 and it was here where his coaching career would resume. Athletic director Tom Pileski asked Gay if he would be interested in joining the school’s wrestling staff, led by a former Whitman-Hanson wrestler, Nick Flynn.
A year later, Flynn stepped down and Gay was the newly minted head coach at Coyle-Cassidy. The school’s wrestling team would merge with Bristol-Plymouth shortly thereafter under the leadership of Gay, a member of the both the state and national wrestling Hall of Fame.
“I just love working the kids,” said Gay, who recently led his team to his 400th match win. “I retired full time in 2014 and stayed with the coaching. For me, I enjoy the excitement of the matches and seeing the kids have success. That’s what it’s really all about.”
One would think Gay spent each of his 70 years on the earth involved in wrestling, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. He got his first wrestling job as an assistant to Ron Brown in 1979 and still chuckles about the circumstances leading up to his initial foray into the sport.
“Ron Brown calls me up on a Friday night and said he needs an assistant,” Gay recalled. “I knew nothing about the sport at all, but I gave it a shot. I went to as many clinics as I could to learn what I could and five years later, I took over the Whitman-Hanson program.
“I learned so much from coaching under Ron for five years. We still run the same practices today that we did back then. We teach them the same moves, work very hard on the training so that they will be be in the best possible shape and not get gassed late in matches.”
With a milestone achievement and birthday in the rare view mirror, Gay is constantly asked how much longer does he plan on coaching. While he has no gameplan for that, Gay did say he has no intentions of chasing down St. John’s Prep coach Manny Costa, who just won his 800th match.
“I tell the parents as long as my health is good and it is, I’ll keep going,” Gay said. “I still love doing what I do.”

Wrestling Notebook: Whitman-Hanson exceeding expectations
By DANNY VENTURA | [email protected] | Boston Herald
PUBLISHED: January 15, 2022 at 2:05 p.m. | UPDATED: January 15, 2022 at 3:20 p.m.
The future may be very bright for the Whitman-Hanson wrestling program, but the present isn’t exactly shabby.
The youthful Panthers have put together a solid 7-2 record coupled with strong showings at both the Sandwich and Whitman-Hanson tournament where they finished in the top three.
“We had a really good feeling about this season,” said Whitman-Hanson coach Gary Rabinovitz, who wrestled on the school’s first team under Ron Brown in 1977. “We knew we had a couple of freshmen coming in who excelled in our youth programs and we got a good transfer from North Carolina.”
The freshmen twins Rabinovitz was referring to are the Lussiers, Charlie and Cooper. Charlie Lussier is undefeated at 106 pounds with nine of his 15 wins coming via pin. Cooper Lussier has been equally as impressive at 152 pounds with a 14-2 record, while NC transfer Austin Gamber is 14-1 at 126 pounds.
Youth has been forced to serve Whitman-Hanson as the senior class hasn’t been on the mat often. Two of the three captains, Pat Collett (145) and Rocco Ruffini (220) were slated to have big years but haven’t had the opportunity due to injuries and illness. The other senior, Joe Boss, has done his part with a 12-2 record at 113 pounds.
The junior class has been very productive so far. Aidan Guiliani is undefeated at 132 pounds and won the Whitman-Hanson tournament. Braden Kain follows Guiliani in the lineup at 138 and is 10-4 on the season. Heavyweight Maddox Colclough is 8-4 and was second at the Whitman-Hanson tournament.
“We have a good squad and it is a lot of fun coaching them,” Rabinovitz said. “The kids are very competitive, they hang around together. Wrestling is like a family, these kids care about one another and pull for them.”

Season Preview: Exciting season in store for wrestling team

The Whitman-Hanson Regional High wrestling team is expecting to be “highly competitive” this season.
There is a lot of optimism surrounding the Whitman-Hanson Regional High wrestling team this winter.
Why, you ask?
“I believe we can fill all 14 weight classes before we get to January,” said sixth-year head coach Gary Rabinovitz.
That has been problem that has hindered the Panthers’ ability to add to the win column in the past.
“By doing this with a majority of quality wrestlers the results will be very positive,” Rabinovitz said.
W-H returns just five wrestlers from last spring’s season, in which they went 6-7. Senior captains Pat Collett and Rocco Ruffini are two of them.
Collett is in his second year as a captain and his fourth as a starter. He will compete at 145 pounds.
“Pat brings a great deal of passion to our program and realizes that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” Rabinovitz said.
Ruffini wrestles in the 220-pound weight class.
“Rocco has really grown as a leader over the past three years and we are looking not only at his vocal leadership but also his technical abilities,” Rabinovitz said.
Senior Joe Boss (113 pounds) and juniors Maddox Colclough (285) and Aidan Guiliani (132) are also back. Junior Braden Kain is also reruns at 138 pounds after taking last spring off for baseball.
“All four of these wrestlers wrestle hard every day and believe in their abilities,” Rabinovitz said.
The Panthers also have three newcomers with five to six years of wrestling experience in freshman twins Charlie (106) and Cooper Lussier (152) and sophomore Austin Gamber (126). Gamber came to W-H from North Carolina.
“I expect that our upperclassmen will help these young men to mold the future of Whitman-Hanson wrestling,” Rabinovitz said. “I truly believe that we have the chemistry to be highly competitive this season and going forward.”
W-H, which opened its season with a clean sweep over Durfee (64-12), Cambridge Rindge & Latin (44-30) and Sandwich (45-12), is back on the mat Saturday, Dec. 18 at the Sandwich Early Bird tournament.
“We need to wrestle smart and learn both from our success and failures,” Rabinovitz said. “It is going to be a very exciting season, I can guarantee that.”
